Early Life And Education

Jeff bezos was born on 12 January 1964 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to a teenage mother Jacklyn Gise Jorgensen and his biological father Ted Jorgensen. The two were married for a very short time period, almost less than a year. When Jeff Bezos was 4years old, his mother remarried Mike Bezos, a Cuban Immigrant.

Jeff Bezos was a computer loving person from a very young age. He used to rig electrical devices all over his house and turned his parents garage into a laboratory. He moved to Miami as a teenager and started to develop deep interest in the computer world. He also graduated valedictorian of his high school class. It was during high school when he started his first business, The Dream institute, an educational summer camp for the fourth fifth and the six graders. This was the start of making his dreams true.

Bezos attended Princeton University following high school. In 1986, he earned a summa cum laude degree in electrical engineering and computer science. As of 2023, Jeff Bezos IQ is around 145 which is quite remarkable in the list of top entrepreneurs.

Career In The Finance Industry

Following his graduation from Princeton, Bezos secured employment at a number of Wall Street companies, such as Fitel, Bankers Trust, and D.E. Shaw, an investment firm. Bezos was appointed as D.E. Shaw’s youngest vice president in 1990.

Bezos made the bold decision to venture into the uncharted territory of e-commerce, despite the fact that his career in finance was incredibly lucrative. In 1994, he resigned from his position, relocated to Seattle, and opened an online bookstore to capitalize on the unexplored internet market.

Amazon Career: The Start And The Breakthroughs

On July 16, 1995, Bezos launched Amazon.com, which he named after a meandering river in South America, after inviting 300 friends to beta test the website. A few workers started working with Bezos on software development in his garage in the months before launch, and eventually they moved their operations into a two-bedroom home furnished with three Sun Microstations.

The company’s early success was phenomenal. Within 30 days, Amazon.com sold books in 45 foreign countries and throughout the United States without any press promotion. Sales surpassed $20,000 per week in two months, growing more quickly than Bezos and his startup team had anticipated.

When traditional retailers started their own e-commerce sites, many market analysts questioned whether Amazon, which had gone public in 1997, could compete. After two years, the start-up not only maintained its position but also surpassed rivals to take the lead in e-commerce.

In 1998, Bezos expanded Amazon’s product line by selling CDs and videos. Later, he partnered with major retailers to sell toys, clothes, electronics, and other products. Amazon thrived, with annual sales jumping from $510,000 in 1995 to over $17 billion in 2011, while many early 1990s dot. coms failed.

In his 2018 annual shareholder letter, media magnate Jeff Bezos announced that the company had achieved more than 100 million paying Amazon Prime members. Only a few weeks after Apple, in September 2018, Amazon became the second company to ever reach a $1 trillion valuation.

Amazon declared at the close of 2018 that it would increase its employees’ minimum pay to $15 per hour. Employees at the company protested during Prime Day in July 2019 due to ongoing criticism of the company’s harsh working conditions and fast-paced work environment.

Blue Origins: The Space Exploring Giant

Bezos established Blue Origin, an aerospace business, in 2000. The company creates technologies to bring space travel closer to the reach of paying customers. The company ran in silence for fifteen years.

Later, in 2016, Bezos extended an invitation to media to tour the headquarters located in Kent, Washington, which is close to Seattle. He gave a vision of humans eventually colonizing space in addition to visiting it. Bezos pledged in 2017 to raise money for Blue Origin by selling roughly $1 billion in Amazon stock each year.

He unveiled the Blue Origin moon lander two years later and announced that the business was testing its suborbital New Shepard rocket, which would carry passengers into space for a brief visit. “We intend to construct a space travel route. Then incredible things will occur, Bezos predicted.

NASA revealed in August 2019 that Blue Origin was one of 13 businesses chosen to work together on 19 technology projects aimed at reaching the moon and Mars. Blue Origin is creating engine nozzles for liquid-fueled rockets and a safe and accurate lunar landing system. Additionally, the business is collaborating with NASA to construct and launch reusable rockets from a renovated facility not far from the agency’s Kennedy Space Center.

Head Of The Washington Post Company

Bezos gained notoriety on August 5, 2013, when he paid $250 million to acquire The Washington Post and other periodicals connected to its parent company, The Washington Post Co.

With the deal, the Graham family—which included Donald E. Graham, the company’s chairman and CEO, and his niece, Post publisher Katharine Graham—came to an end of their four-generational rule over The Post Co.

“The Post could have survived under the company’s ownership and been profitable for the foreseeable future,” Graham stated, in an effort to explain the transaction. “But we wanted to do more than survive. I’m not saying this guarantees success, but it gives us a much greater chance of success.”

Bezos tripled the newspaper’s technology staff and hired hundreds of reporters and editors; in the summer of 2018, hundreds of these workers wrote an open letter to their boss requesting pay raises and improved benefits. The group took pride in a number of scoops, one of which being the disclosure that Michael Flynn, the former national security advisor, had lied to Congress about his interactions with Russians, forcing him to resign.

Personal Life And Family

When Bezos was employed at D.E. Shaw, he met MacKenzie Scott (previously known as MacKenzie Tuttle), who was an administrative assistant whose job it was to pay the bills so she could pursue her writing career. After dating for three months, the couple decided to get engaged, and they were married in 1993. Together, Bezos and Scott are parents to four children: a daughter who was adopted from China and three sons.

As the company’s first accountant and collaborator on the creation of the company’s business plan, Scott played a crucial role in the establishment and growth of Amazon. Though reserved and reticent, she openly backed her spouse and Amazon. By profession, Scott is a novelist. She studied under Toni Morrison at Princeton University and published her first book, The Testing of Luther Albright, in 2005. Her second book, Traps, was released in 2013.

In 2019, after being wed for over 25 years, Bezos and Scott got divorced. Bezos’s ownership of Amazon was reduced from 16 percent to 12 percent as part of the divorce settlement; this made Scott’s ownership of the company more than $37 billion and Bezos’ nearly $110 billion. Scott declared that she would donate at least half of her fortune to worthy causes.

An 11-page exposé about Bezos’s extramarital affair with television host Lauren Sanchez was published by The National Enquirer shortly after the business mogul announced his divorce from MacKenzie in January 2019. Bezos then started looking into the intentions of American Media Inc., the company that owns The National Enquirer, and The National Enquirer itself. In a lengthy Medium post the following month, Bezos claimed that AMI had threatened to release explicit photos if he did not back off with the investigation.

“Of course I don’t want my personal photos published, but I also won’t partake in their well-known practices of political attacks, blackmail, and favoritism.” Instead, I would like to get up, turn this log over, and see what crawls out.

Bezos hinted at a potential connection between the Saudi Arabian government and AMI’s actions in that same post. A forensic examination of Bezos’ phone later showed that it had been compromised following the receipt of a video from Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman over WhatsApp.

In April 2019, Sanchez and her husband got divorced. That July, she and Bezos attended Wimbledon for their first public appearance together. Page Six broke the initial news of Bezos and Sanchez’s engagement towards the end of May 2023.
